TL;DR
Self-belief can be rebuilt through direct experience and evidence, observing similar people succeeding (vicarious mastery), or by recognizing that self-doubt is just a thought you don't have to accept.
“By actually just getting evidence of you being good at the thing.”
“If the people around you are doing a thing well, you'll start to believe that it's possible for you, too, to do the thing because, you know, these are people who are similar to you.”
“Believing in yourself is a thought, not believing in yourself is a thought. It's just a thought. It's like the weather. Like, you don't have to believe a thought.”
1. Direct Experience: Building Confidence Through Volume
The first method is gaining self-belief by accumulating direct evidence of competence. By making many YouTube videos, for example, you naturally develop belief in your ability through repetition and tangible results.
2. Vicarious Mastery: Learning from Similar Others
Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious mastery suggests that surrounding yourself with people like you who are succeeding boosts your confidence. Watching podcasts and content from people in your demographic doing the thing makes it feel achievable for you too.
3. Thought Observation: Choosing Belief Consciously
Self-doubt is just a thought, not a fact. Through meditation and mindfulness, you can create distance from negative thoughts about yourself and consciously choose to believe in yourself rather than accepting doubt as truth.
