1. The Hat Riddle Setup
Four prisoners are buried neck-deep in sand facing execution. They're offered freedom if they can guess their hat colors. There are 2 black and 2 white hats. Three prisoners face a wall in a line (seeing only those in front), and one is behind a wall seeing no one.
2. Solving the Riddle
Prisoner B correctly identifies his hat color by analyzing prisoner A's silence. Since A didn't shout, B deduces that A and C must be wearing different colors. Seeing C's white hat, B concludes his own must be black.
3. Information Hidden in Silence
The riddle demonstrates that the absence of information (A's silence) can paradoxically convey critical meaning. This principle applies beyond logic puzzles to real-world security scenarios.
4. Real-World Application: Timing Attacks on Passwords
Hackers exploit similar logic with server response times. If a rejected password takes longer to reject when the first letter is changed, it suggests that first letter was correct. Servers checking characters sequentially reveal password information through timing delays.
